Recipe Old Fashioned Grits
If grits are too thick stir in a little bit of water or milk before serving.
Recipe old fashioned grits. When the liquid comes to a rapid boil turn the heat down to medium low and slowly whisk in 1 cup old fashioned grits and 1 teaspoon salt. For thinner grits increase water. Add green onions bacon cheese and replace the water with chicken broth.
Gradually add the grits whisking constantly. Whisk continuously for two minutes to prevent lumps from forming. If grits are too thin cook a little while longer or allow to cool slightly tips add cheddar cheese for creamy cheesy grits.
Because the entire kernel is ground including the germ stone ground grits often have a speckled appearance and a more toothsome texture and rich corn flavor. The grits are ready when most of the water is absorbed and the grits are al dente tender with a toothsome bite. Stir in cheese until melted.
After cooking the grits on the stove take them off the heat and add butter salt and an egg or two mixing immediately so the egg cooks in the hot grits. Season with pepper and additional salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
Between the two stones of a grist mill. Combine water grits and salt in 2 cup microwave safe bowl. Cook stirring frequently until creamy 15 20 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium low and cook stirring. Add butter and salt this is basic. Reduce heat to low.
