Recipe Old Fashioned Southern Green Beans
Pour green beans into a colander to remove any liquid from jar or can.
Recipe old fashioned southern green beans. Add the beans brown sugar and water. Cook on high for 5 6 hours until green beans are tender drain beans and add butter. Remove to a serving bowl with a slotted spoon.
Remove the strings from the beans and cut the beans into 2 inch pieces. Move the green beans around occasionally with tongs to ensure that the green beans on the top make their way to the bottom to season and cook. Rinse lightly with cool running water let drain.
Step 2 place the ham hock and 5 cups water in a dutch oven. In a large cast iron or other heavy skillet cook bacon over medium heat until crisp about 5 minutes. Add green beans to a large crockpot add chopped bacon chicken stock water seasoned salt black pepper and garlic powder.
Toss with the bacon and butter if using. Slice the pork side meat into thick slices. Bring to a boil.
Cook for 1 to 2 hours or until the green beans have reached your desired level of doneness. Green beans may be cleaned trimmed and cut up to 24 hours in advance. Place pork in a sauce pot over medium heat.
To serve drain the beans and serve topped with the crumbled cooked bacon. Cover and simmer until beans are crisp tender 15 minutes. Wash the beans thoroughly.
